You rock sir: Gene Simmons strikes the right chord in Rock School

TEACHERS are clever. Usually. But they are not always smart.
Rock School, in which Kiss guitarist Gene Simmons and his legendary long tongue were dropped into antiquated boarding school Christ’s Hospital to transform straight-laced kids into rock gods, was a superb surprise on Channel 4.
Already the villain of the piece seems to be the school’s deputy head, Mrs Ireland.
There she was, spying through the window looking very po-faced at the (not very) raucous proceedings as the strains of Queen’s We Will Rock You blasted out, before lecturing “Mr Simmons” and trying to turn the kids against him.
I mean what does the woman expect? I’m sure she’s cleverer than I am but you don’t invite a rock god who has made love to more than 4,000 women, dresses in a full-length leather coat and wraparound sunnies in a passable impression of
Satan, into your school without bracing yourself for a little disruption.
The school’s lack of research was in evidence when the head said he knew Simmons was a “pop star” but hadn’t heard of any of his music.
Simmons was instantly charismatic. He’s playing up to his image but here’s a guy who genuinely cares about this project to turn a bunch of oboe-playing Henrys and Henriettas into a rock band comfortable facing a crowd of 5,000.
He instantly zeroed in on the class’s oddball – a ginger lad – as the only one able to be the frontman. He reasoned, quite properly, most rock stars were loser kids at school.
His choice was met with disgust and disappointment by the cooler kids but then since their names were Dudley and Lucien we can disregard them – out of hand.
The fun and games continue on Friday as Simmons defends himself in the debating chamber, takes his charges to see Placebo and orders them to air-guitar along to Born To Be Wild.

The new live KISS two-disc DVD set will be available in stores on December 6th through Image Entertainment. Shot in High Def, the DVD will feature the hottest songs from the Washington, DC and Virginia Beach, VA concerts, filmed during last year's 2004 Rock The Nation tour. The song list is vast and features a collection of KISS gems, many performed and recorded live for the first time in many years. The DVD will also include KISS Powervision interactive bonus features that include Select-A-KISS, allowing the viewer access to separate channels for each of the four band members. At any time the viewer can watch the main concert program or switch to different cameras focusing just on Paul, Gene, Tommy or Eric. The DVD will be loaded with additional behind-the-scenes, life on the road footage and interviews, giving the viewer a virtual all access pass to sound checks, the famed KISS dressing room and other rare glimpses into the world of KISS.
