July 31st -

   Hello everyone.
KISS finished it's Chumash shows and I woke up at 5 am the following morning, and got on two separate flights to make it in time to the INDY MICHIGAN race...
What an amazing day. First, storm clouds the size of Godzilla were headed our way. Gusts that flew your ass off the ground hit us and we went off to the airport, fearing we would miss the flight we had booked for NY (re an important meeting first thing the following morning)...
As luck would have it, the INDY Race ran. In point of fact, there has only been ONE cancellation due to weather. Nascar has cancelled over four, I'm told.
We started off this morning having said meeting and then I sequed to the GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS press day's worth of events. The Family is all here. Miss Tweed. Nick and Soph. We just did CNN.
And, if you want some summer reading, please pick up the beautiful Shannon Tweed's book KISS AND TELL (Simmons Books/Phoenix Books) where Shannon does, indeed kiss and tell... and my GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS (Sex Money Kiss) (Simmons Books/Phoenix books), which is the same book, with added chapters and foto pages.
A&E has done a wonderful job of promoting our show -- witness all the full page ads in STAR, PEOPLE, US and so on. And, the Times Square and Sunset Boulevard billboards.
The A&E GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS web site (click here) will show you more!!!

Just wanted to tell you, Gene, that it's a wonderful network, A&E that you are having your new show air on. You are in the company of some really entertaining and thought-provoking programming that i enjoy immensely. I'm one of those people that likes to watch a good murder-mystery-cold case type of show, and A&E is chockful of 'em. I've seen the commercial for Gene Simmons Family Jewels about a dozen times and CANNOT WAIT for the premiere!! This is gonna be cool, and if I know you and your intentions sometimes, will fit the thought-provoking mold as well. Congratulations, ahead of time, because I know it'll be wonderful.

Gene Simmons to Air Family Jewels

Posted Jul 25th 2006 6:20PM by Jeff Davidson

Following in the footsteps of the Osbournes, rock legend and wildman Gene Simmons of KISS, along with his family, will serve as the latest reality family to hit the small screen.
Gene's family is slightly scandalous in certain parts of the country as, unlike Sharon and Ozzy, he's not married. The show will feature his "unmarried" partner of 20+ years and former Playmate of the Year Shannon Tweed and their two children. Like Ozzy, we'll get to see Gene offstage in his Dad persona doing regular Dad stuff like bringing Gatorade to his daughter's soccer games and cheering on his son's band. And, Gene being Gene, we'll see some intimate moments with Shannon like a discussion over Gene's preference for sex over food.
It'll be interesting to see if the couple discusses Gene's reported cavorting with groupies "fans" over the years. At a recent press conference, Shannon opened up a bit on the subject:
"`I am not a stupid girl, nor am I doormat..."`He has never lied to me, and I don't think he cheats.''
But she also reportedly makes a distinction between "emotional cheating and sexual cheating,"' with the latter forgivable as long as it doesn't include the former. Now, that will be one interesting conversation if they get into it. I can hear men's ears perking up around the country and honing their "but it wasn't emotional cheating" defense.
Family Jewels premieres on A&E, Monday, August 7th with back-to-back episodes at 10 & 10:30 PM EST.

Indy Racing League Seeks a Kiss of Marketing Savvy

A Look at Its Partnership with Rock Star and Promotional Entrepreneur Gene Simmons

By Ken Wheaton
Published: July 23, 2006

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Don't let the tongue, big ego and rock 'n' roll past fool you. When it comes to making money, Gene Simmons is serious. Serious as cancer. And with the advent of Simmons Abramson Marketing, a partnership with former "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" producer Richard Abramson, he thinks he can make money for you, too.

Best known for the Kiss bassist persona that catapulted him to international celebrity, Gene Simmons is also a businessman with an animated TV series, two TV reality shows, his own record label, two best-selling books and the marketing company Simmons Abramson, which has been working on the Indy Racing League account since last year. That campaign now has a new Gene Simmons theme song, 'I am Indy.'

Of course, any marketer looking to hitch its wagon to the Simmons Abramson experience will have to buckle up for the ride. After all, Simmons is the guy who refused to use the preferred acronym for his first client, Indy Racing League, because IRL sounds "corporate and worse" (worse, in this case, being "a disease").

'Your logo sucks'
According to Mr. Simmons, the first thing he told Indy representatives was: "Indy's fantastic, but your logo sucks." He had a few other comments as well. "The Indy Racing League used to be No. 1," he says. "Nascar eclipsed it and left it in the dust ... because, quite frankly, Nascar did a better job of it." But Simmons Abramson, which partnered with Indy in January, set out to change all that.
The approach was simple: Play up the phrase "Indy" and its ties to independence and individuality; focus on the speed of the cars; take a more Nascar approach in making the drivers into distinct personalities (rock stars, if you will); and create a theme song.

Theme song: 'I am Indy'
Yes, a theme song: "I am Indy," which Mr. Simmons recorded with the one artist on his own record label, a man by the name of BAG. (The song complements the "I am Indy" ad campaign.)
Most of this, as one would expect, was met with a resounding round of skepticism and disdain. "Oh, it was horrible," Mr. Simmons said. Then again, "You should have seen the comments when [Kiss] first put makeup on."
Yes, the makeup. As in Kiss. In the course of the brand's 32 years of existence, it has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and has 24 gold and 10 platinum records under its belt. Oh, and the small matter of 2,500 licensed products, from condoms to, most recently, a Kiss Coffeehouse in Myrtle Beach, S.C. "When we sit at home, we make more money than we do on tour," Mr. Simmons says.

'Too rich to care'
Kiss' history may explain why Indy took a deep breath and gave the relationship a whirl despite some of the baggage Mr. Simmons brings to the table (Simmons Abramson's one other client is mobile-phone storefront provider G8Wave). While he may be serious about making money by concocting marketing campaigns, Mr. Simmons is brash, outspoken, even abrasive. (One of the reasons he's not afraid to speak his mind to business partners, he says, is "How do I put this? I'm too rich to care.") There's also the small matter of his many other business ventures (see box). And, more often than not, regardless of what's being marketed, Mr. Simmons himself tends to become the story.
Mr. Simmons, for his part, is quick to point out that the marketing company could "just as easily be called Abramson Simmons marketing." While people are initially drawn to the company because "of my ugly mug," he says, "they soon find out I'm a little bit more than what I seem like and that we actually do have the goods with Rich Abramson-who might as well have horns on his head if it's true that the devil is in the details."

'Are you nuts?'
When Mike Ringham signed on as Indy's VP-marketing in October 2005, the Simmons Abramson deal was already under way, and he admits he had his own concerns about it. "Being a fan myself, I was unsure about what this guy would bring to the party. And some of my friends who are fans were on the phone with me immediately, saying, 'What are you guys doing with Gene Simmons? Are you nuts?"' Mr. Ringham points out that "Gene as frontman" was a bit of misperception created by the press that Mr. Simmons "reluctantly accepted when it was thrust upon him, and did quite well, I think, for a racing novice." Mr. Ringham, you could say, has become a fan.
And while Mr. Simmons is aggressive, Mr. Ringham says, "I wouldn't call him abrasive at all. But he does know how to market, has strong opinions and is a tough negotiator."
As far as the full plate goes, Mr. Ringham says, "Gene and Rich both assured us-and demonstrated more than once-that this effort is extremely important to them. And in my mind it's become a personal challenge for them that they very much care about."

Rare flash of humility
Talking about the deal even brings out a rare public flash of humility from Mr. Simmons. "I can't tell you the amount of pride we have in seeing an entity that size that's willing to trust us."
There is method in his madness and, even while holding court with journalists, the man who admits that he loves to hear himself talk will drive the message home over and over again. In the course of an hour-long interview, in which he covered everything from fashion models to the "pathetic" condition of the American male, Mr. Simmons repeatedly steered the conversation back to the Indy script.
"In essence what we're doing is making Indy cool. It's cooler than Nascar and Formula 1 for one very simple reason: It's faster. These are the fastest cars on earth. So that makes our jobs easier."
"It's just about repositioning a message and then rolling up the sleeves and doing the work ourselves," he adds. One example: After inviting himself to a branded-entertainment conference in Los Angeles earlier this year, Mr. Simmons met with representatives of NBA star Carmelo Anthony. That meeting resulted in Mr. Anthony becoming the first African-American to co-own an Indy racing team. The deal, in fact, is exactly the sort of thing that Simmons Abramson was hired for. According to Mr. Ringham, Mr. Simmons Abramson wasn't hired to be ad agency or spokesman, but to "utilize Rich and Gene's extensive contacts and marketing prowess to assist in our business-development initiatives." (Indy is conducting a review for an agency but wouldn't disclose those participating.)

Indy Girl line of clothes
Another of those initiatives is expanding the Indy brand. There are plans, for example, to home in on women, with talks of an Indy Girl line of clothes and accessories.
"Doesn't even mention the word car. Why should it?" Mr. Simmons says. "If there are guys walking around with little insignias on their shirts showing a little guy on a horse, I guarantee you most of those guys don't have a clue what polo is, what the rules are, or what that guy's doing on the horse or even what the ball looks like."
Purists, not surprisingly, have taken some umbrage at Mr. Simmons' efforts to cast the Indy net as wide as possible. "I'm not in the purist business," Mr. Simmons says. "I'm in the people business. Purists will be dragged kicking and screaming into a world they don't want to be in. ... Our only precondition that you become an Indy fan is that you love it. You don't have to know squat."
But Mr. Ringham maintains that Indy is "currently targeting motorsports fans primarily" and that Messrs. Simmons and Abramson are themselves becoming better-educated Indy fans. "Rich has attended every event so far this year, and Gene has only missed two," despite his myriad other obligations.

Attendance up 20%
The results? Scads of press coverage, of course. According to Mr. Abramson, attendance is up some 20% over last year. And, says Mr. Ringham, so are sponsor value and merchandise sales. "And if you adjust for the Danica factor in '05, we've got a nice trend going on a three-year basis," he says.
And Mr. Ringham's evaluation to date on Simmons Abramson: "I think Gene and Rich were a bit surprised at how long some of these things take to do. ... Given that, they have done quite well, and I anticipate that will become more apparent shortly."

Gene Simmons allows peek inside

Kiss musician and girlfriend Shannon Tweed promote memoir and A&E series about family life
By R.D. Heldenfels

PASADENA - Has Kiss rocker Gene Simmons finally decided to reveal his warm and cuddly side?

You could argue that, at least for public consumption, Simmons doesn't have one. At a news conference Thursday during the TV critics' press tour, he was still obnoxious, verbally combative and very much the huckster for his various enterprises.

Asked, for example, which Kiss song is his favorite, he said, ``The one that sells the most is my favorite.''

But Simmons for public consumption isn't necessarily Simmons all the time. Evidence of that will begin appearing in August in bookstores, where his longtime love, Shannon Tweed, will have her memoir Kiss and Tell, and on TV screens, when A&E airs Gene Simmons Family Jewels.

In the book, Tweed actually uses words such as ``sweet'' and ``humble'' to describe her man.

The series is not only about Simmons but also about the Simmons-Tweed family, including Shannon and their children, 17-year-old Nick and 14-year-old Sophie. It shows the current home life as well as footage going back to when Nick and Sophie were young.

Nick -- tall, lanky and funny -- could emerge as the real star of the show as well as one of the antidotes to Gene's outrageousness. But even in the news conference, Simmons was taking fire from several directions -- the kids and Tweed.

When he and Tweed were asked about parenting, Tweed called him ``Mr. Absentee Rock Father.'' And he conceded that most of the parenting was done by Tweed.

Which means, of course, that Daddy is famous for being an overly amorous rocker and Mommy is well-known for being naked. But Tweed and Simmons insist they are regular parents in a lot of ways.

``Our household is actually run pretty straight ahead,'' said Simmons, who -- unlike, oh, Ozzy Osbourne -- insists that he has never been high or drunk. ``Our responsibility is to protect our kids, supply the money and nurture and love and protect them with our lives. Their job is to do well in school and behave. Period. This notion of parents having to negotiate with their children... is out of the question.''

Tweed added that they're not strict about everything. ``Stuff like picking your clothes up off the floor isn't that important,'' she said.

But the show is bound to start conversations about double standards. In a clip from the show, Simmons seems laissez-faire about Nick and girls, while being extremely protective of Sophie with boys. The positive portrayal of a family where the parents are not married may worry some. ``We've never been married,'' Simmons admitted. ``We've also never been divorced.''

Then there's Simmons' image as a womanizer, someone who acknowledges that he likes to surround himself with beauties. Tweed is ambiguous about what Simmons does, and how she feels about it.

At the news conference, she said, ``I am not a stupid girl, nor am I doormat,'' which suggests she knows things happen, but she doesn't feel brought down by them. In the book, she says: ``He has never lied to me, and I don't think he cheats.'' But she also makes a distinction between ``emotional cheating and sexual cheating,'' with the latter forgivable as long as it doesn't include the former.

But let's say that Family Jewels does in some way soften Simmons' image, does make him seem less like the rogue that's been rocking stages for more than 30 years. Isn't Simmons then risking the foundation of his fortune?

He says he has enough not to worry.

``When you're filthy rich and you've been around for over three decades, it's OK to say this is who I am onstage, and this is who I am offstage.''

Gene Simmons Shows Parenting Skills on TV

The Associated Press
Friday, July 14, 2006; 5:57 PM

PASADENA, Calif. -- By night, Gene Simmons goes to work wearing makeup and spitting blood in the rock band Kiss. By day, he's got some downright normal ideas about parenting.

Simmons, his partner Shannon Tweed and their kids _ 17-year-old Nick Tweed-Simmons and 14-year-old Sophie Tweed-Simmons _ let cameras into their home for the new A&E series "Gene Simmons Family Jewels."

"Our responsibility is to protect our kids, supply the money and the structure and the love," Simmons said this week at the Television Critics Association summer meeting.

"Their job is to do well in school and behave, period. This notion of parents having to go negotiate with their children who just learned to wipe their butts is out of the question."

Tweed isn't one of those mothers who nag about picking up clothes off the floor, either.

"We focused more on the important things in life, like your school work," she said. "The kids have their priorities straight _ staying sober and paying attention."

Simmons says he lives by the same rules he applies to his kids.

"I've never been high, drunk, never smoked in my life," he said.

"Can't say the same for me," Tweed added.

BRITISH ROCK SCHOOL STAR LANDS BIG MONEY RECORD DEAL

ROCK SCHOOL contestant CHRIS HARDMAN has landed a GBP500,000 ($900,000) record deal with RCA aged just 15. The singer/guitarist was chosen by KISS legend GENE SIMMONS as the frontman for the band he created from pupils at an English high school, and wowed viewers with his musical talent and extrovert personality. Hardman - who is nicknamed LITTLE CHRIS by his friends in Lowestoft, England - is amazed by his achievement. He says, "I can't believe it. When they offered me the deal I genuinely thought it was a big joke. "It is going to be really cool making my first album." A spokesperson for RCA predicts Hardman will be a massive success in UK: "Little Chris is best described as a grown-up BART SIMPSON after he discovered rock music. "He has a massive personality. He's like a cartoon character in a good way." Simmons said of Hardman on the show, "He could be a recording artist within three years. He's a DAVID in a GOLIATH's world. "He has the heart of a lion, charisma and delusional self-confidence despite living in Lowestoft, which is the most depressing place I have seen."

My girlfriend and I got the pleasure of going to Richmond, Va. this past weekend for our first every INDY RACE! I just want to share a picture of just how fast these cars can go and to let everyone know how wonderful INDY RACING is! This track from what I was told is one of the smallest tracks so the cars were not able to go their maximum speed which is around 230 or more. These cars where so loud, so fast and so unbelievable that it gave us goose bumps. I recommend going to see a race if possible! Just look for the logo, "I AM INDY" because my girlfriend and I are now Indy girls!! Thanks for a great time!!
